The historic center of Cáceres is the medieval monumental highlight of the Extremadura. It is virtually intact and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A tour of this city holds for great admiration squares, arches, towers, palaces, churches and convents in a number and quality so that the visitor will need several days to get idea how much treasure.
With more than 20,000 years old, the nearby Maltravieso Cave is decorated with paintings of the Upper Paleolithic. In Roman times was Norba Caesarina colony founded by the consul Lucius Cornelius Balbus to 25 B.C. Fragments of the wall remain also inscriptions and statues. Visigothic period little remains. It seems that strategic prominence after winning Coria Alfonso VII in 1142. Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries is a defensive point that protects Islamic Badajoz and Mérida. The Almohad built a fence on the Roman wall in the twelfth century, almost entirely preserved today. The only Islamic fortress is a magnificent water tank inside the Veletas Palace, now museum.
It was definitely reconquered for the Christian armies between 1227 and 1229 by Spanish troops, Leon and military orders, of which architectural remains conserved throughout the province. In 1229 receives charter of Alfonso IX as "Villa de Realengo" (Royal Town) and is linked to the Castilian king. At the end of the next century begin to settle in the town nobles from Salamanca, Galicia and Leon. Between the fourteenth and sixteenth time appears the main cultural and artistic center of the city and erected most of the buildings of monumental Cáceres. They are eminently defensive buildings, evidence of a closed class, bellicose, wealthy and proud to show off their crests on the facades. Today, these crests are present throughout the historic area which is a very important tourist attraction.
The Baroque period primarily involves changes in the walls, palaces reforms and improvement of roads and communications, as well as the construction of new monasteries, chapels and hospitals.
In the eighteenth century rise school and the church of the Jesuits, also known as the Church of the Precious Blood that is beloved by all Caceres, the Palace of the hearing, the Estrella Arche, some chapels and Sanctuary Our Lady of the Mountain, a major tourist attraction for those who visit. The City Council, the Provincial Hospital and Asylum, in the twentieth century just change the face of Cáceres.
